The most common mistake people do is trying to take away the possessions of the hoarders. This usually is counterproductive because they will only collect more items at a faster rate. Family and friends are encouraged to find therapists with experience to help out the hoarders.

One of the most popular hoarding treatments is psychotherapy. The therapy is known as cognitive behaviour therapy, and it focuses on a number of important elements of hoarding. With this treatment, the hoarder will have the chance to identify and explore their reasons for hoarding.  They will also be able to learn how to categorize and organize their possession so that they are able to determine the ones to get rid of. They will also be able to learn how to refrain from collecting and acquiring more items. Severe hoarders may need to be hospitalised to deal with the problem, while the mild hoarders can have periodic visits and ongoing treatment to allow them maintain healthy habits.

The psychotherapy may also involve family and group therapy. Family therapy is geared towards educating the family members about hoarding and what actions it needs to take to help their loved one. Group therapy is a platform for hoarders to exchange experiences and to get support from each other. It is important because it helps them deal with their isolation.

When it comes to medication, research is being conducted to find the most effective one to deal with hoarding. The most common medications for hoarding are a type of antidepressants called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It is important to note that these medications will have different effects on different people.

In order for the treatment to be effective, it is important that the hoarders take good care of themselves. For starters, they need to make sure that they follow the treatment plan as it will help them feel better about themselves and understand the force behind their hoarding.  They also need to maintain hygiene and get proper nutrition.

With the knowledge that hoarding results to loneliness and isolation, which eventually leads to more hoarding, hoarders are encouraged to reach out to other individuals. The more they associate with others, the less they will hoard. For those who do not want to invite family and friends to their homes, getting out of the house and visiting them is a better idea.

Family and friends also play an important role in hoarding treatment. They should be careful of how they react to a hoarder. Criticism and negative comments will only make the situation worse. They should also resist the temptation to force the hoarder to discard his/her possessions as this will either slow the process or make the hoarders increase acquisition. It is also important to communicate in a proper and clear way as this will make things easier for both the hoarder and the family.
